Stunning Modern Construction Plans for Makkah

Makkah is regarded as the holiest city in Islam and is home to the Kaaba, Islam's holiest site, as well as is direction of Muslim prayer. Mecca has seen tremendous expansion in size and infrastructure, home to structures such as the Abraj Al Bait, also known as the Makkah Royal Clock Tower Hotel, the world's third tallest building and the building with the largest amount of floor area. During this expansion, Mecca has lost some historical structures and archaeological sites, such as the Ajyad Fortress.

Today, more than 15 million Muslims visit Mecca annually, including several million during the few days of the Hajj. As a result, Mecca has become one of the most cosmopolitan and diverse cities in the Muslim world, despite the fact that non-Muslims are prohibited from entering the city. Below are pictures of a proposed construction plan of Masjid al Haraam, Makkah.

Many people around the world appreciated the new plan saying it will fulfill the space needs in future, however several Muslims criticized the plan saying it looks like a stadium and it seems too futuristic and may be some lobby's approach to turn this city into Las Vegas.

Update: This project was initiated by Mr. Ahmed Serry, he while talking to editor of this bog said that this project was started voluntarily and was presented to governor of Makkah as well as in a number of universities. It was presented to construction company as well that was responsible for new projects in Makkah. The project was presented to them as an idea that can be useful. Mr. Ahmed designed this project in 2008.
